NEW YORK (United Nations) – Sunday, 18 June 2023 (APS) – At its latest meeting on Mali in New York, the UN Security Council unanimously paid tribute to Algeria’s role and leadership, as leader of the international mediation, for the role it has played to resolve the crisis in Mali.
All members of the Council reaffirmed “the centrality of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali, resulting from the Algiers process (2015), in restoring lasting peace in this country, particularly in this transitional phase in Mali’s history marked by important electoral deadlines that should enable the country to return to constitutional order, scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.”
Most members of the Council welcomed “the importance of the Algiers Agreement, which significantly contributed to the achievement of the ceasefire between the Malian parties for eight consecutive years.”
In this regard, the council’s members called on the Malian parties to “take into account the need for full and speedy implementation of the Algiers Agreement, which remains the cornerstone for lasting peace and stability in Mali, and which has now become more important than ever, particularly in this period of transition.”
They also “paid tribute to Algeria’s tireless efforts to keep intact the commitment of the signatory parties to the Algiers Agreement, in particular through the latest proposals aimed at bringing the Malian parties closer.”
