ALGIERS – Thursday, 13 July 2023 (APS) – At the beginning of 2023, Algeria had more than 5 million fixed Internet subscribers, compared with 3.5 million at the beginning of 2020, making it 2nd in Africa and 3rd in the Arab world in terms of the number of fixed broadband subscribers, according to figures published on Thursday by the Prime Minister’s Office at the end of the weekly government meeting.
At this meeting, chaired by Prime Minister, Aïmene Benabderrahmane, the government heard a presentation by Minister for Post and Telecommunications on the state of implementation of the action plan to improve Internet connectivity.
With regard to access to the telecommunications network, by the beginning of 2023 the sector had registered “more than 5.12 million fixed Internet subscribers, including more than 776,000 subscribers to FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) technology across the 58 wilayas, compared with 3.5 million at the beginning of 2020, which places Algeria 2nd in Africa and 3rd in the Arab world in terms of the number of fixed Internet subscribers,” said the source
According to the same source, the minister’s presentation highlighted “the efforts made by the State to develop the Internet in Algeria”, adding that in terms of mobile Internet, “the number of subscribers has risen from 37 million in 2020 to 45 million by the end of 2022, including 4G coverage of 82% of the population.”
It was also noted that “international bandwidth capacity has risen from 1.5 terabytes per second in 2020 to 7.8 terabytes per second by the end of 2022, enabling a five-fold increase in the minimum connection speed, which has risen from 2 to 10 megabits per second, with no impact on tariffs,” the source concluded.
