NEW YORK (United Nations) – Saturday, 02 September 2023 (APS) – Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amar Bendjama stressed on Friday the need to implement the resolution on the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly to make the UN “more productive and efficient” in the future.

In his quality of Coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Group, the Permanent Representative of Algeria at the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on behalf of NAM countries on the revitalization of the assembly work.

Bendjama stressed the need to implement the resolution on the revitalization of the work of the GA so that the UN becomes “more productive and efficient” in the future, recalling that this resolution is the result of “inclusive, transparent and intense” consultations.

According to the Algerian diplomat, the resolution in question “is ambitious” and brings “significant progress” on several important issues, particularly the enhancement of the Office of the President of the General Assembly and the reaffirmation of the role of the General Assembly.

Besides, Algeria’s permanent representative welcomed the progress achieved to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the GA work by lightening its agenda, as well as the recent innovations concerning the working methods of the Ad Hoc Working Group.

He also called for the progress made in the selection and appointment process for the Secretary-General to be maintained and improved while bearing in mind the need to ensure gender balance and geographical representation when it comes to selecting and appointing the best possible candidate for the post of Secretary-General, and for other key UN posts.

Bendjama emphasized that the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly “is a political process and not just a procedural matter”, and is aimed primarily at strengthening the General Assembly’s role as the main deliberative, representative and decision-making body.
