ALGIERS – Tuesday, 13 June 2023 (APS) – The minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, received Monday a phone call from his Belgian counterpart, Hadja Lahbib, with whom he exchanged views on the priorities of Algeria’s next term as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the ministry said in a statement.
The Belgian minister congratulated Algeria on its election as a UN Security Council non-permanent member for the biennium 2024-2025, and exchanged views with Attaf on Algeria’s priorities as a Security Council member, the statement added.
The two sides discussed the development of relations between the two countries in the political and economic fields, mentioning the partnership between Algeria and the European Union.
The two ministers exchanged views on “several issues of common interest, mainly the latest developments in the Sahel-Saharan region, in the context of the political and security challenges facing the countries and peoples of the region,” the statement said.
Algeria was elected last Tuesday at the UN General Assembly meeting, in New York, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for biennium 2024-2025.
Algeria will start its term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council on 1 January 2024 and its membership will run until 31 December 2025.
It is Algeria’s fourth term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, after those of 1968-1969, 1988-1989 and 2004-2005.
