ALGIERS – Thursday, 18 May 2023 (APS) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf chaired on Wednesday, in Jeddah, the meeting of the ministerial committee for the implementation of the proposals of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune on the reform and development of the Arab League, adopted by the Arab leaders in the Summit held in Algiers in 2022, the ministry said in a statement.
These proposals consist in strengthening the role of the Arab League in preventing and settling conflicts through the creation of an Arab Committee of the Wise, consolidation of the popular dimension of the joint Arab action by establishing an inter-generational dialogue forum to support the joint Arab action and the promotion of innovation and the status of young people by implementing an Arab startup fund and an Arab incubator network, said the source.
The decisions of Foreign ministers of member countries focused on the practical procedures to speed up the implementation of the provisions of President of the Republic “as soon as possible.”
As regards the proposal to strengthen the relation between the players of the civil society and the bodies of the Arab League, Attaf underlined that a working group in charge of the popular dimension of the joint Arab action has already examined this issue, and suggested concrete proposals, stressing the importance of inviting this group to complete and present its work in its final shape.
“It is our responsibility to define the objectives a of the proposal of creating an inter-generational dialogue forum, as well as its field of action, by relying on previous experiences, like the inter-generational dialogue forum, held in September 2022 in Oran, in the presence of representatives of 19 Arab countries, and which achieved encouraging results aimed mainly at bringing the Arab civil society with all its components closer to the institutions of the joint Arab action,” said the minister.
Regarding the creation of an Arab Committee of the wise, he said that the committee’s missions must be defined, as it is supposed to include “distinguished and internationally renowned Arab personalities and to work as a means of prevention and a tool enabling the Arab League to act rapidly in its contribution to the resolution of the disagreements.”
Attaf said that the creation of an Arab fund to support startups is extremely important to strengthen the position of young people and innovation in the joint Arab action, notably in view of the dominating role played by these startups in the economic development of several Arab States.”
