ALGIERS – Saturday, 13 May 2023 (APS) – Cooperation between Algeria and Nigerian has rapidly developed over the past few years, mainly through an intensive exchange of visits, the creation of bilateral mechanisms and the conclusion of agreements allowing those two major African countries, sharing the same views on regional and international issues, to enhance their economic partnership and carry out strategic projects for the African integration.
Algerian-Nigerian cooperation has experienced a sustain momentum recently, leading to the creation of a parliamentary friendship group, the signing of a bilateral agreement in 2022 on the creation of a business council for the development of projects in various fields and the conclusion of a memorandum for the execution of a Trans-Saharan highway gas pipeline project, the Trans-Saharan Highway and the Trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone connecting Algiers to Abuja.
The two countries have both a strategic and geopolitical position in Africa, in addition to natural resources contributing to the building of a strong partnership, with joint projects to enhance economic cooperation and promote trade.
The mechanism of cooperation and the major structuring projects between the two countries are combined with an intensive official activity marked by an exchange of visits by ministerial delegations, members of parliament (MPs) and business leaders.
In this respect, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama paid an official visit to Algeria, last November.
During the visit, the Nigerian FM welcomed the “quality” of the political and economic relations between the two countries.
