BOUMERDES (Algiers) – Monday, 27 March 2023 (APS) – Nearly fifty fishing boats a year are built in Boumerdes (50-km southeast of Algiers) in six build and repair shipyards, to cover the domestic needs in fishing and leisure boats, and for exports, the provincial department of fishing and aquaculture said.

The shipyards, operational for many years, are located in various areas, including the ports of Dellys, Zemmouri, Cap Djinet and the business park of Khemis El Khechna, the sector’s manager told APS.

“The revival of shipbuilding and ship repair is meant to establish a fishing fleet to step up national fish production capacities and to ensure food security,” Kadri Cherif added.

Employing more than 250 graduates of vocational training in permanent positions, the shipyards build different types of wooden and polystyrene boats, having a length from 4.80 to 35 metres, the official said.
