AMAN conference highlights role of media in environment protection in Mediterranean

Held by the Croatian national news agency HINA, in collaboration with the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN), the conference focused on the role of the media, notably the agencies of the region responsible for processing and disseminating information, in the choice of language and media discourse to contribute efficiently to efforts to protect the Mediterranean environment.

“The media, like news agencies, must assume a societal and civic responsibility to help the general public understand the issues and consequences of pollution in the Mediterranean and its impact on the ecological system and the degradation of the environmental framework, marine in particular”, said Nina Obuljen Korzinek, Croatian Minister of Culture and Information.

According to her, “the expected awareness of the citizens of the countries of the region of the major challenges facing the States of the region, requires a common media strategy to awareness and information, involving the main institutional media players of the countries of the Mediterranean.”

“Their responsibility is great because it is fundamental to faithfully pass on the words of academicians and experts concerning the various questions of the Mediterranean environment,” she continued.

For the CEO of the Italian agency ANSA, Stefano Piero Carlo De Alessandri, it is important to seize the opportunity of professional organizations such as AMAN for joint reflection on large-scale actions capable of boosting collective consciousness and efforts to preserve the Mediterranean environment.
The 30th general assembly of AMAN, in which all the member press agencies of the Alliance participate, was attended by Samir Gaid, President of the Alliance and Director General of Algerie Presse Service agency (APS), Mokhtar Amine Khelif, Algeria’s Ambassador to Croatia, the Palestinian Minister of Information, Ahmed Assaf and the SG of AMAN, Georges Penintaex.
